Winnifred was destined to become a ghost town from its inception. Given the short-sightedness of both the Canadian Pacific Railroad and the Alberta government of the day, people flooded the area when offered land for sale at give-away prices. What the CPR or the Alberta government didn’t mention was that without irrigation a farmer would be fortunate to get a crop one year in five. There were other problems. Wood for fuel was scarce and water wells produced only sparingly if at all. But the town lasted until the 1960s when the last business closed its doors, moved away, and Winnifred became a ghost town.
