For the most avid ghosttowner, the banks of the Rideau Canal contain some of the oldest and best preserved historic towns and villages. Among them is the partial ghost town of Andrewsville. Named after its first resident, Rufus Andrews who built a shingle mill on the shore of the Rideau River in 1843, the town had its best years between 1870 and 1900. The town boomed from the start and had a grist mill, sawmill, carding mill, stores, and several blacksmiths. It also had daily stagecoach runs to other towns. Bypassed by the railroad, Andrewsville died as did many other mill towns for the same reason. Submitted by: Henry Chenoweth
