REMAINS:
The indented and remote shores of northeastern Lake Superior were home to numerous fishing villages. Gargantua was typical of most remote fishing settlements. Hidden behind a headland and safe from Superior’s fury, an icehouse, net shed, warehouse, and a few homes lined the shore. In later years a few tourist cabins were added along with the shanties of some squatters. By the end of World War II, the lakes fishery collapsed, a victim of over-fishing. The era of the summer fishing villages was over and Gargantua was a ghost town.
