Happy Valley is mute testimony to what pollution can do to a town. The town literally died, as did many of its residents, from an overdose of pollution generated by a smelter in the nearby company town of Falconbridge. The workers of Happy Valley shunned the company town wanting the independence of their own homes and businesses. Unaware of the modern day term Temperature Inversion that beset the Falconbridge area forcing the heavy sulphur fumes from the smelter into the valley, the residents of Happy Valley were submerged into a cover of poison. They were dying from pollution. The Ontario government, the nickel company and others worked out a plan to buy the town and moved the residents to safer ground. What is left are the driveways, abandoned homes and yards of what was once Happy Valley. Submitted by: Henry Chenoweth
