REMAINS: Today, the site is popular with hikers curious to investigate the locations of Ontario’s ghost towns. The school still stands.
Ontario’s canal era witnessed the rise and fall of dozens of shipping villages. One of them was Opinicon. The mines and mills in the area used the Rideau Canal to export their products. Opinicon was one small shipping point that appeared on Lake Opinicon through which the canal passed. The village had a hotel, a few stores, a blacksmith, a cheese factory, a flourmill, a school and even a few commercial fishermen. It prospered briefly and then disappeared.
