REMAINS: Although part of the old townsite is below the water, the post office building still stands.
Springtown, now a ghost, grew on the shores of the Madawaska River. A stopover place for settlers traveling up the river, Springtown dates from 1848 when the first post office opened. In its prime, the village contained a blacksmith shop, hotel, general store, and a sawmill. Springtown’s importance declined when the Kingston and Pembroke Railway and travel along the road dwindled. Later, much of the Madawaska River was dammed for its hydroelectric power potential flooding part of the original townsite.
