Spry was one of a number of hamlets that appeared as settlers worked their way north on the Bruce Peninsula. It was established in 1879 and its population eventually reached one hundred and eighty. Spry remained small but did have a general store, a Union church, a blacksmith shop, school, and a community hall. The post office closed in 1919 and by 1926 the population had shrunk to fifty. Eventually the school, church and store all ceased to operate and the sawmill fell silent for want of timber.
