NAME: Mount Tabor
CLIMATE: some snow in winter, very hot summer
BEST TIME TO VISIT: early spring and fall
Was once a farming settlement around the early 1800's. It had a church and some other buildings, which have since fallen to ruin. The church is the only building left intact.
REMAINS: The Mount Tabor church built in 1932.
|This is a correction to what I had submitted earlier. The Mount Tabor church was built in 1932. The town of Mount Tabor was actually established in 1854 as farming community. The last know residents were the Crow family who owned a 270 acre farm. When Mrs. Crow died, sometime in the 1980's? Her children sold off the land in parcels. The old church is still standing intact, with an out building on the site, a piano, the ten commandments painted on the walls, the pews, and a painting of Jesus hanging on the wall over the piano. There are also many of the old wood buildings left semi-intact throughout the area, along with some partial stone walls from old houses and other buildings. I have some on my land, and will update this as more information comes available. The old Crow farm house is also still standing along with the chicken house. It is on private property now, but can still be seen from the road. The site is located off State Highway 230 on Winchester Trail. Take 230 out of Cave City towards Strawberry, go past Hilltop (you'll see a store there at the sharp curve) and make the first right turn down a dirt road (Winchester Trail). It's about 5 or 6 miles to HIlltop from Cave City, and about 2 or 3 miles down Winchester Trail the old church is on your left. Cave City is in Sharp County, but Mount Tabor is just inside of Independence County. . Submitted by: Scott Halfacre
