The Ginocchio store is all that remains of what was once Butte City, a thriving 1850's mining camp in the mother lode country. As early as 1854, Xavier Benoist had a store and bakery in this building. For a time, Butte City, located at the south side of Butte Basin, which was a section rich in auriferous deposits, rivaled it's close neighbor, Jackson. Today, the spot is typical of the many ghost towns reminiscent of California's early mining activity. A roofless stone building stands mutely beside the highway, in the midst of open fields where once a thousand miners' cabins stood. On the hill above, a lonely graveyard where long forgotten miners lie buried. Butte Peak, a high conical mountain visible for miles in all directions, still stands as sentinal.
