The town and post office were officially named Alicante, for the nearby Alicante mine. The mine received its name for the city in Spain. There were several good but under-developed mines about 1880 and the town grew up around the mines. The town received a post office in 1881 and had a population of about one hundred at that time. Despite the good ore but because water was scarce, the area faded rapidly during the mid 1880s and was gone by 1888. Alicante was one of the many suburbs of Leadville. Submitted by Henry Chenoweth.
