Animas City was another town that had a bright future until the railroad caused its demise. The town was in full bloom in 1880 and anticipated further growth with the coming of the Denver and Rio Grande. Instead, the railroad stopped at a point about two and a half miles to the south. That point became an important railroad and smelting center almost overnight. It was named Durango and it grew so fast that many Animas City citizens just picked up their belongings and cabins and moved there. What little was left of Animas City became a suburb of Durango.
