In 1877 an E. C. Bassick, a former sailor, worked at the Centennial Mining Company on nearby Tyndal Mountain. It is said he took the same route to work every day, walking from his cabin to the mine. On his way to work one day, he stumbled over some rocks that looked as if an assay might be in order. It was. The ore was worth $30 which was more than he made in a week as a miner. Thus was born the fabulous Bassick mine. His first carload of ore brought $10,000. He took out more than a half-million in gold and silver before selling the mine to an Eastern company the following year. In all, more than four million dollars in gold and silver was produced. The peak year was 1882 when more than 1,000 persons made Bassick their home. The town is silent today but many of its buildings remain. Submitted by Henry Chenoweth.
