Although not a ghost town but a thriving community, Durango is included here for the reason the town is a "must see" for those interested in the old West of yesteryear. The city was founded in 1880 with the construction of the Denver and Rio Grande Railway. The first smelter was built in 1882. From that time on there was no stopping the progress of the town. It remains a railroad and smelting center, a ranching community and an exporter of stories of the town's early beginning. As Durango began to grow, it became a brawling, rowdy frontier town. It was a supply town, a Saturday Night Town, and a town with its red light and gambling districts. Durango had its share of killings, lynchings and gun battles. It is today a truly western town that offers much of the flavor of the old west. Submitted by Henry Chenoweth.
