Fate has a way of shaping the future. The town of Jasper died before it could learn how rich it might have been. Ten tons of ore were shipped to Denver for analysis in 1887, but the Denver smelter burned down before the assay was made. It wasn't known until later that the ore was rich and by that time the town was no more. Subsequently, some mining was done in the Sanger mine, two miles above the city, and in what became known as the Miser and Perry lodes. But the town never recovered. The site is now a haven for fishermen and tourists. The ruins of the "city that never knew" are a short distance away from new tourist cabins. Submitted by Henry Chenoweth.
