It was a mining town on the flanks of Mt. Royal west of Frisco. It was destroyed by an avalanche circa 1926. Founded in 1866 when General Buford developed some gold and copper leads above Rainbow Lake the town soon sprang up and the Masontown Mining and Milling Company built a 10 stamp mill by 1872. But Masontown always had a problem with transporting ore. The closest railroad was eventually put in at nearby Frisco but it was already too late. After the avalanche in 1926 Masontown was never rebuilt.
