People who go to Telluride to ski and enjoy other winter sports get a bonus. They get to see the remains of Telluride, the early mining town. The town was born when residents of San Miguel wanted to live closer to the mountainside mines, under the high peaks of the San Juans. The town received its name from the composition of ores in the area, which were mostly telluride, a compound containing tellurium, a non-metallic element. So, Telluride seemed an appropriate name for the town. Telluride is situated off of highway 145, south of Placerville. Submitted by Henry Chenoweth.
