The Montague District was a mostly wooded area populated in the late 1800's and early 1900's. It most well known resident was Rev. John Brooke Pinney, former Acting-Governor of Liberia. He settled in Montague in 1879, purchasing a homesteading property there. Pinney built a small private school on his property, where he conducted classes. It was also used as a church in which he preached to blacks of the community until his death, at age seventy-six, on December 25, 1882. A few years ago Marion County sold the fairgrounds. The site is now developing into an upscale housing development called "The Magnolias". Submitted by: Jim Pike
