On Sept. 12, 1835 William Hooper cleared 12 acres, near this site, and planted the first sugar cane ever in the Hawaiian islands. This mill started with the large stone, Chinese-style, sugar grinders in the mill. Plantation cut-cane was hauled to this mill by ox-cart up until 1882, when sugar cane mill train tracks were built.
