GAY

NAME: Gay
COUNTY: Keweenaw
ROADS: 2WD
GRID: 1
CLIMATE: Clod, snowy winters; cool summers
BEST TIME TO VISIT: Late Spring to early Fall
COMMENTS: Gay is being re-inhabited and some of the older houses have been "re-habbed."In view of its name, the town tavern, with the obvious name of Gay Bar, attracts the curious.
REMAINS: The two most obvious signs of its past importance are the large, abandoned school, and the smelter remnants; the beach also has remnants of the piers.
Established in the early years of the 20th century as the site of a number of stamp mills for nearby mines, Gay had a population of nearly 1000 persons during WWI; it has been in decline since the mills closed. Submitted by: Kurt Wenner
