Post office was established on February 11, 1888 and Edward Roberts was first postmaster. Town was named by Roberts after an officer he served under during the Civil War (Brigadier General James Dunlap). The town had a flour and feed mill along the Niobrara River. A cheese factory was also in operation as well as a skimming station for milk. Dunlap was a popular stop between Chadron and Alliance. Highlights were the 4th of July picnics with rodeos, fireworks, and political speakers. Highway 19 was abandoned when Highway 385 was built to the west and shutting off life to the town. "New Dunlap" was built to the south along Highway 385. A store and dance hall was opened. The buildings are now privately owned.
