BANNOCK

NAME: Bannock
COUNTY: Lander
ROADS: 4WD
GRID: 1
CLIMATE: Hot summer, cool winter.
BEST TIME TO VISIT: Anytime.
COMMENTS: Interesting country.
REMAINS: Nothing.

Bannock, named for the Bannock Indians, had a population of almost 200 at the time the post office was opened in November 1909. A gold ledge was discovered during the summer and soon a small camp formed. Bannock had several saloons, a two-story hotel, and a small red light district. Bannock died a quick death. One week the ore was there and the next week it was gone. By summer of 1910 the camp was almost completely abandoned. Occasional efforts were made to mine the placers but nothing of value was ever found. Today, only the placer dumps mark the spot.
