Pactolus is described as “an extremely insignificant and short-lived gold mining camp.” High-grade gold ore was discovered 1902 that prompted a camp of twenty to form. The only major mine, the Doctor mine, only yielded several shipments of ore from 1905 to 1907. The shipments became smaller and smaller until the mine finally closed. The camp emptied quickly after the mine finally closed. Only one dilapidated building marks the site.
