CLIMATE: Hot summer, cool winter.
BEST TIME TO VISIT: Anytime.

REMAINS: Ruins.

Phonolite was an apt name for the town that started and folded and started again and folded again. The first two attempts were phony—all talk and no ore. These took place between July 1906 and January 1912. The third attempt was successful. In 1913, two mining companies joined together to successfully operate until 1924. Financial troubles forced the company to close. There are few remains at Phonolite. The huge concrete foundations of the mill dominate the site and the ruins of two wood cabins are nearby. The site is now privately owned and permission is required before exploring.
