TONKIN

NAME: Tonkin
COUNTY: Eureka
ROADS: 2WD
GRID: 1
CLIMATE: Hot summer, cool winter.
BEST TIME TO VISIT: Anytime.
COMMENTS: Interesting country.
REMAINS: Private Property.

Tonkin was a small ranching settlement established during the late 1890s. Like some before it, Tonkin was important only for the reason it served the postal needs for ranchers in nearby Denay Valley and miners working small mines in the area. The post office remained open until 1931. The ranch is still operating as part of the Dry Creek Ranch operation. Many of the original buildings remain, including the large ranch house. This is private property, so ask permission before wandering around the site.
