Kusa was a booming coal mine and lead smelting town. It had movie theaters, hotels, banks, it's own newspaper and many opportunities for the willing. Newspapers on microfilm can still be viewed at the Henryetta, OK Public Library. At one time Kusa was the largest town in Okmulgee County. When the railroad came through Henryetta and Highway 266 bypassed the town to the north, the writing was on the wall and Kusa faded into memory for most people. It's getting harder to find people who remember the hey-day of Kusa in the 10's, 20's and 30's, but thankfully the old newspapers have been preserved. Submitted by: GW Calvert
