ASAY TOWN

NAME: Asay Town
COUNTY: Garfield
ROADS: 2WD
GRID: 7
CLIMATE: Winter snow; 7000+ ft.
BEST TIME TO VISIT: Summer/Fall
COMMENTS: The town site is on private property about 0.7 mi. off US-89 (west of Bryce Canyon) per "The Historical Guide to Utah Ghost Towns" by Stephen Carr. However, there is an abandoned homestead just off US-89, 5 miles south of Hatch. There is a fairly intact cabin and several farm out-buildings. The whole site is very overgrown. Watch out for an open, uncovered well off the south end of the cabin. The reference mentions a cemetery which I have not found--it may be at the town site rather than near the homestead.
REMAINS: Cabin and farm structures
The area was a farming community in the late 1800's but the high altitude and short growing season resulted in poor crop yields. Submitted by: Harold Frodge
