Copper was the ore of choice in Index. Located in what the pioneers called a “Hole,” the town is surrounded by towering peaks in a wild section of the Cascades near the rushing Skykomish River. Mt. Index with its pointing rock needles dominates as high a horizon as a town could have among the deep timber. The town is spectacularly located. Population was minimal until about 1897 when new veins were opened and operated by the Sunset Copper Company. Index supported hotels, drug stores, a newspaper and a number of other businesses until the deposits wore thin and the town died. A few interesting buildings exist but are fast disappearing.
