For a fun drive, with a lot of old mine building above and below, drive Oh My God Road from Idaho Springs to Central City - they have practically ruined now - making it 2 lanes wide and putting in guard rails, but the views are worth it. Then continue up the Peak to Peak (Colo 93?) towards Nederland. Shortly after you head up the canyon past Blackhawk a road takes off to your left and up a canyon. THis leads to American City. You can also get there from one of the roads leaving the Central City Cemetaries (Which, by the by are very interesting to wander around). Not a lot left up American city but some - very few people. Contiue up towards Nederland - If you get a book on Gilpin county it lists some of the ghost towns remaining up Travis Gulch (several structures - Ive ridden horseback through there). Once you get to Nederland, turn north on 72 for 0.4 miles, then west on County 128 to Caribou. Very little remaining but a lot of great country to hike through.
