First as a gold mining camp and later as a town named Gold Hill, the site came into being in 1884 with the discovery of the Gold Chief Mine in September of that year. Never a populous town, it did however have a boardinghouse and several stores plus a school that operated six months of the year. Gold Hill's active life continued for more than twenty years. By 1905, the population had dropped to thirty. Today the Gold Hill Ranch occupies the site of the onetime mining camp. The only remaining trace of Gold Hill is the cemetery that rests on a hill just beyond the ranch. Courtesy Henry Chenoweth.
