A real ghost town. Vacant structures stand pitted against the elements on a lonely bluff overlooking Trementia Creek. The ruins consist of at least two dozen rock buildings; most are roofless, doorless and windowless. Some contain the rusty remains of stoves, bedsprings and other items that indicate people once lived there. Further evidence is the walled cemetery containing graves with headstones and other markers dating back to the 1800s. There is little doubt people had been living along Trementina Creek for many generations but the actual townsite was chosen about the turn of the century. A Presbyterian medical missionary, a Miss Alice Blake, is recognized as the organizing force behind the town. Various adverse events, including a diphtheria epidemic that swept through the town in 1901, contributed to its demise. The depression of 1929, followed by a severe drought and World War II enlistments forced people to leave their homes and move on. Courtesy Henry Chenoweth.
